ZENIGATA YOSAKOI – Kanonji’s ZENIGATA Festival

Kanonji’s ZENIGATA Festival which is held every July, provides various events like, ZENI-Rock – a music concert performed by high school students bands. ZENIGATA LIVE – a concert by local musicians, ZENIGATA Bon Festival, ZENIGATA Fireworks and ZENIGATA Bon Festival. (The term “ZENIGATA” (coin shaped) is taken from the famous gigantic 350 meter Edo period coin-shaped earthworks on the Ariake Beach in Kanonji.)The festival date this year was July 16th and 17th.

On the 17th, dancers dressed up in costumes, which look as gorgeous as the fireworks on the same day and they performed YOSAKOI dance.(YOSAKOI is a unique style of dance in Japan and are danced at festivals and events all over the country.)

The voice of the dancers and sound of Naruko (small wooden clappers) is echoing all through the town.

IMG_4587Every YOSAKOI dance group has their own dance team’s name written on their flag and they make the dance performance exceptionally spirited.

The temperature this day was very hot, more than 30ºC (86ºF), but the passion and the heat from the dancers seemed much hotter than the weather of the day.

YOSAKOI dance was performed at 8 locations outside from 1:00PM to 9:30PM and the length of each dance group’s performance were about 3 to 5 minutes. There were 88 groups with 8800 dancers in all this year and the wonderfully powerful YOSAKOI dance performance impressed and attracted everyone who visited the festival.
